Fair Trading Vs Bank Charges

2006 Barclays Bank Annual Report
£2,267 for every second of every day throughout the year, or £136,000 a minute
The Current Bank of England' base rate

What this minority experiences is a succession of hidden charges designed to make up for the fact that the majority receive their “free” banking. It comes in the form of extortionate unauthorised bank charges. For example, Barclays charges 27.5% for anyone who goes over their agreed overdraft limit. A fee of £30 is charged per account per day, up to a maximum of £90 within each monthly charging period.
On top of that, a “paid referral fee” of £30 is charged when Barclays actually pays out for an item that results in your account going overdrawn by more than £5 without an agreed limit, or by more than £5 above an agreed limit.
In addition, this fee is also charged if Barclays pays any further items that increase your unauthorised borrowing by £1 or more. It is easy to see how an inadvertent slip can cost a small fortune in charges.

Logically, this does not make sense. The cost of offering a banking service is fundamentally the same for every customer. Sure, there are additional costs, such as the cost of sending out a letter to someone who is overdrawn. But independent experts commissioned by the BBC have estimated that the “true” cost of doing so works out at no more than about £4.50, while the interest charged on that unauthorised overdraft is more than four times the current Bank of England base rate.
In other words, the way costs are incurred and profits made is skewed dramatically against those less able to pay them. That cannot be right.

OFT ( The Office of Fair Trading ) ရဲ႔ အကူအညီ နဲ႔ တရားရင္ဆုိင္ႏုိင္ပါေသးတယ္ လုိ႔ ဆုိထားပါတယ္။
Consumers can claim back up to six years of charges.Involved alongside HSBC, RBS and Barclays in the test case are HBOS, Lloyds TSB, Abbey, Clydesdale and building society Nationwide. Together they provide about 90 percent of UK personal current accounts.
