Fair Trading Vs Bank Charges

2006 Barclays Bank Annual Report
£2,267 for every second of every day throughout the year, or £136,000 a minute
The Current Bank of England' base rate

What this minority experiences is a succession of hidden charges designed to make up for the fact that the majority receive their “free” banking. It comes in the form of extortionate unauthorised bank charges. For example, Barclays charges 27.5% for anyone who goes over their agreed overdraft limit. A fee of £30 is charged per account per day, up to a maximum of £90 within each monthly charging period.
On top of that, a “paid referral fee” of £30 is charged when Barclays actually pays out for an item that results in your account going overdrawn by more than £5 without an agreed limit, or by more than £5 above an agreed limit.
In addition, this fee is also charged if Barclays pays any further items that increase your unauthorised borrowing by £1 or more. It is easy to see how an inadvertent slip can cost a small fortune in charges.

Logically, this does not make sense. The cost of offering a banking service is fundamentally the same for every customer. Sure, there are additional costs, such as the cost of sending out a letter to someone who is overdrawn. But independent experts commissioned by the BBC have estimated that the “true” cost of doing so works out at no more than about £4.50, while the interest charged on that unauthorised overdraft is more than four times the current Bank of England base rate.
In other words, the way costs are incurred and profits made is skewed dramatically against those less able to pay them. That cannot be right.

OFT ( The Office of Fair Trading ) ရဲ႔ အကူအညီ နဲ႔ တရားရင္ဆုိင္ႏုိင္ပါေသးတယ္ လုိ႔ ဆုိထားပါတယ္။

A closer look at the nation's personal borrowings shows that the rich are piling on debt faster than the middle class -- though for very different reasons.
According to the Federal Reserve Board's Surveys of Consumer Finance, the nation's richest 1% loaded up on $342 billion in new debt between 1998 and 2004, the latest year for which data are available. (The 1% represents households with net worths, including primary residence, of at least $6 million.) Economists say that debt number has probably continued to grow since 2004, because interest rates remain low by historical standards.

In fact, some sociologists and economists say the rise in wealthy people's debt stems in large part from the growing pressure among the elite to keep up with richer peers. The biggest disparities in wealth today are among the rich, with mere millionaires getting shoved aside by decamillionaires, centimillionaires and billionaires.
So the haves are borrowing more to keep up with the have-mores. Those in the 95th percentile to 99th percentile of wealth have almost twice as much debt as the top 1%, as measured against assets. Economists and wealth managers say it's the single-digit millionaires who are becoming the most stretched, as they borrow to match the lifestyle of even-wealthier people.
The result, says Dalton Conley, a sociologist at New York University who studies status, is even more debt. "What we're seeing is the top 1% struggling to keep up with the top 1/10th of 1%," he adds. "And those people trying to keep up with the top 1/100th of 1%. There is a drive by the merely rich to keep up with the obscenely rich."
